I am reading the Hunger Games for book club! So far this is a very good book. It is about a girl named Katniss (A girl from the poorest districts) who get chosen to fight in the Hunger Games. These games are to remind them of the doom days (when their districts were formed). The doom days were very bad. There was poverty, no shelter, and tons of fighting. The Hunger Games take after this. 24 people are chosen and forced into the Hunger Games by the Capitol. The Capitol is the head of all the districts and can force anyone into something. The district are separated by woods. If you are caught hunting in the woods, you could be beat or put to death. This is why, in many districts, people are starving. Now, back to the Hunger Games. Like I said, 24 people are chosen and after 3-4 days of training and being spoiled, they are put into an arena. This arena is rigged with all sorts of things. There are bombs set in certain areas, barley any lakes for water, very harsh weather, and more. These players have to make there way through everything so they can find the little water and supplies they need to survive, but also they have to watch out for each other since the last person standing wins the game and receives the life long supplies for their families. So far in the games, Katniss became great friends and allies with a young girl named Rue. Rue just died by getting speared by a boy right before Katniss got there. Of course Katniss killed him right after that but she was still very sad because her and Rue had become like sisters. Now, out of 24, only 6 are left. I just finished the part where the Capitol made a new rule. This rule states that if people from the same districts are the last standing, they can both win the games. Right at that moment, Katniss shouts out “PEETA!” (Peeta being the boy from her district in the games) and I don’t think that was smart at all!
One question that I thought would make me think deeper into the book, that I would like to share, is:
I wonder how the story would be different if it was told from different points of view? I think this book would be way different if it was told from different points of view because you would be able to see what others people strategies are and the different supplies each person has. Also the feelings they had about the games, the Capitol, and others.
What do think we should d0 to our security or should we do anything at all? Leave your answer in a comment!
I am reading a book called the Hunger Games. So far this book is about a world. A world that is the ruins of a once known land of North America. In this world, there is one main place. This place is called the Capitol. Other than the capitol, there are 12 other districts (the 13th was disinigrated because they broke the rules). In these districts, you aren’t allowed to leave the town to hunt or anything else (only to go to the market), according to Katniss (A poor girl in district 12), these aren’t the rules of life. She has to go hunting to feed her family because they can’t get anything else. In those woods she met a boy named Gale. They have been good friends and have helped each other a lot.
Now, they say their land was formed by the doom days and in a reminder never to go back to those days, they hold the Hunger Games. In these games, 24 people between the ages of 12 and 18. They fight off in rough conditions and the last one standing wins. The winner get prizes and food for life. The only problem is that Katniss is in this games and she has a connection in some ways to (one so far) the other contestants. If she wins it will help her family tremedously, but first she has to deal with the other people.
Knowing that Katniss has a connection with one other contestants, I think it is going to be hard for her (or them) to kill each other for the win. This might help me later in the book because I really know how some of the contestants feel and what also helps me feels what they feel is knowing that they might be poor or needing help, if they win these games, they could bring their family back and help them out a lot. So, there might actually be a bit of pressure on them even if it wasn’t directly put like that (also considering that they are fighting for their life too).
I have got a little bit farther in my book called Cast Two Shadows. Now in this book, Caroline and her Grandmother have got back from their journey to go and find Caroline’s hurt brother (Of course if you read my last post, you would know that her brother was off fighting for the British, but he didn’t want to be a loyalist. So he ran away after he got his brutal whippings.) When they got back Jonny made a plan. His plan was for him to go and fight with the rebels, but when they got home, the British commander (living in their home) found out that Jonny ran away because he was a rebel. Jonny had to make a new plan and he had to get his family away from that crazy guy (Except for his sister, Georgia Ann, since she loved the Commander and was a loyalist). So his new plan was for Caroline to take her mother to Uncle Henry’s while she was ACTING sick. This is how far I’ve got in the book and it is very hard to stop because things are getting very interesting!
This book really connects to many books that I’ve read because it shows what people had to go through back when the times were though and it shows how many people had separate thoughts when it came to who was a loyalist and who wasn’t. Many people had to leave behind family members, fight through injuries, and sometimes even turn on their families.
I really like how the author uses actual facts when it comes to certain parts of the book. So like for instance, in our social studies book we are coming up to a man named Cornwallis and what’s cool is that he is in our book! I also think it’s cool that this book can connect to many things that we learn in real life. It seems like everything I do at school somehow connects to what I’m reading and what happened back then.
One thing that is very singular about this book is that the author makes some of the characters talk as if it was a long time ago, but the cool part about that is it makes you feel more IN the book and it makes you feel like your actually experiencing it in real life! I can see that this trait in the characters and writing took a lot of thought! I am very glad that I am getting the chance to read it and I hope some others will want to, too!
I just saw a very inspiring story and speech about a girl named Adora Svitak. Adora is a very young and unique public speaker. Her main message was that adults should learn from kids because kids don’t feel held back. They have a great imagination that parents need to remember and that parents need to encourage.
What really caught me by surprise is that she wasn’t even nervous at all. She was a very fluent speaker who used difficult words. She made the audience laugh and think at the same time. From the days she was four, she loved to write. She got a lap top at age six and wrote 300 small stories. She kept going and going wanted to get a published book. Many people turned her away, but she didn’t give up. Finally, she got her first book published. I think the cool thing about this is that she never gave up on her dreams of being an positive influence and an intelligent person. I think this can really help younger kids know that they can still dream and dreams sometimes do come true. She really prove that kids can actually strive and become the best at certain things (in her case speaking and writing).
I think this could really effect the future population because even though there can be hard times, she is putting light in to the world. She keeps her hopes up and keeps fighting through everything and look where it has got her! She is amazing! I think that if more adults and kids learned off of what she is doing, it would make a huge improvement in the world.
I really think this could be a changer in the world and I hope a lot of people look into her. I believe her message is totally true and very unique! She is a very powerful speaker and I bet she will go farther than she even is right now. If you want to check out the video click Adora Svitak.
I am reading a book called Cast Two Shadows. This book is so far about how Caroline doesn’t want to be a loyalist like her sister. She wants to be a rebel like her father. Now, she wants to go fight, but first she needs her slave Grandmother to cook for the captain of the British to help get her father out of jail (for being a rebel), but then she finds out her brother is hurt and she has to go help him. She needs some protection so she is allowed to take her Grandmother with her. They are starting off their journey now, taking the hidden routes so they wouldn’t get questioned and searched. Now, it might be a dangerous journey so Caroline took a musket (which is illegal since the British came). They don’t want to the British to get suspicious! I am going to share what my least favorite and favorite parts of this book are so far.
My favorite parts are how even though her Grandmother is mad at her, she still has a huge connection with her. Also I really like how Johnny (her brother off fighting) always encouraged her when she was younger and I really think it helps motivate her!
My least favorite part is how she always has to go through loneliness and sadness because Johnny is off fighting and her very good friend Kit got hanged by the British so I really feel bad for her.

For my next book club book, I am going to read a book called The Calder Game. I have read this book before, but I don’t remember what it’s about, so I am going to read it again. I really loved the other books of these series by Blue Balliett and I have an earlier post on one of them if you want to check it out. This is probably my favorite genre. It’s like a realistic fiction, but mystery sort of book. I really like how the author creates a very good picture in your head while you read. She uses very good description and plot line that keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting to read more and more. I encourage everyone to read these books and bet if you read them, you would love them!
I am reading a new book called Amos Fortune and this book is, so far, about a slave boy who gets torn away from his tribe and family in Africa. He is forced to be sold. Lucky for him, he got a very nice owner. The owners have two children and one of them really has a good connection to Amos. She helps read and write more fluent. Right now he is growing up with them, getting to be a very big and strong young man.
This book connects to many books I’ve read, but one thing that I really think it connects to is our social studies book. I think it connects to this book because in our social studies book, slavery was a huge problem! Whites were capturing African Americans and putting them to work by beating and torturing them. Many people were against this, but most didn’t have a choice. They either had to buy the slaves, move and fight Indians for land, or be poor (which most didn’t want). They would have to do one of these things because the Africans were put to work in fields and produced things. The farmers were selling theirs for more and the buyers wouldn’t buy their products so they would be poor if they didn’t do one of these things. This all ties into Amos Fortune because Amos was one of those Africans. He was torn away from his family and forced to travel day and night until he got on a ship to Massachusetts to go get auctioned off. On this ship Amos gets little food and small space. When he gets ashore, he gets thrown in a pit and has to fight for food. So they are very much alike in many ways!
